Beginner, Advanced Beginner or Intermediate? A simple parent's checklist for finding the right starting point, so your child is challenged but never overwhelmed.

Starting at the right level is the single biggest factor in whether a child loves chess or quietly gives up. Too easy and they get bored. Too hard and every class feels like a defeat. Here's how to find the sweet spot.

Start with what your child can already do

Ask your child to show you a game, and watch for these milestones:

  • Knows how every piece moves, including castling, en passant and promotion
  • Plays a full game from start to checkmate without help
  • Spots simple threats, like a piece about to be captured
  • Knows at least one checkmate pattern, such as king and queen against a lone king

If your child can't do the first two yet, Beginner is the right place. If they can do all four, they're likely ready for Advanced Beginner.

Signs your child is ready for Intermediate

Intermediate is where chess shifts from "what can I take?" to "what's my plan?" Your child is probably ready if they:

  1. Regularly win games with tactics such as forks and pins
  2. Know a couple of openings with both white and black
  3. Can win a basic king-and-pawn endgame
  4. Have played in at least one tournament, online or over the board

Age matters less than you think

We often see seven-year-olds who are ready for Intermediate and twelve-year-olds who should begin at Beginner. Skill, focus and enthusiasm matter far more than age. A good level is one where your child succeeds about 60–70% of the time: enough to stay motivated, with enough struggle to grow.

The easiest way: a level assessment

You don't have to guess. In our free demo class, a coach plays and solves puzzles with your child for a few minutes and recommends a level based on what they actually see. It takes the pressure off you, and children usually enjoy it.

Tip: Don't push a child up a level just because a friend is there. Mastering the basics properly makes every later level faster.
